Allure and Flaws

My work „Allure in Flaws“ – „The Attraction of Imperfections“ or „Fascination in Defects“ is the result of a year-long creative process. The theme of healing is strongly reflected in the working process. Continuous work, with its various layers and the autonomy of the material (epoxy), brings, as in life, unpredictabilities. Irregularities and unplanned moments often arise due to the influence of the mate- rial, leading to various effects such as cracks through chemical processes.

This process shows me that, when allowing for randomness, „imperfections“ can arise, which, precisely because of their uniqueness, radiate attraction and distinctiveness, in contrast to a smooth, perfect surface. During my working process, when I poured the first layer, a crack emerged due to a chemical reaction. Instead of concealing this perceived „flaw,“ I consciously worked with it and filled the crack with paint to give it meaning and highlight it.

The elements found in my work, such as the collage and the dried seed, did not originate specifically for the project but are results of merging different areas, works, and worlds. The collage, depicting an eye that I distorted, symbolizes society‘s critical view of „imperfec- tion“ and our expectations. The seed, found on the roadside and perhaps deemed insignificant or lifeless by some, reflects my perspec- tive on life. Even in an ostensibly „dried-up“ state, a seed is capable of creating nature, forming a vibrant environment and life form with its uniqueness and distinctiveness.

The work is a call to all, including myself, to recognize that we are already unique through our different layers and do not need to earn this uniqueness. Sometimes, „imperfections“ enhance our beauty on various levels rather than weaken it. Let‘s transform our critical gaze on ourselves, others, and the world into an attentive and loving one, as this allows us to better shape our lives. Through this, a perfection emerges that is truly special.

CIAO

Ciao is an interactive sculpture that was presented during the Covid-19 pandemic at Rewe Premium in Munich. As artists, it was important to us to emphasize the significance of art, especially since, during this time, all museums were closed despite low visitor numbers relative to the size of the spaces, while all stores remained open.

Visitors now experienced the works of 20 different artists during their routine shopping, with their works seamlessly integrating between olive jars and bread, providing a brief moment of surprise and breaking the usual visual habits.

The work Ciao was created in collaboration with Lara Koch and aimed to invite playful interaction among customers in the store, particularly during a time when interpersonal communication was minimized.

The supermarket serves as an interface between anonymity and very personal taste. Guided by the product assortment, we try to complete our shopping quickly. But where is the time for a brief moment of pause and to perceive our surroundings?

How about a change of perspective? Would you like to break away from the seriousness of everyday life or be inspired and meet interesting people across the shelves?

Ciao is a communication funnel that allows for a connection between a shelving unit. Even if it's just a fleeting glance through, encountering an unfamiliar face on the other side.

Each funnel was individually designed by both of us, symbolizing the communication between us as artists.
